SRI BRAHMA GNANAPUREESWARAR TEMPLE - KORUKKAI, PAZHAYARI

Brahma Gnanapureeswarar Temple is dedicated to Hindu God Shiva located in Keezha Korukkai, Pazhayarai near Kumbakonam in the South Indian State of Tamilnadu

Temple History - An Overview

There was no gopuram at the main entrance – It probably existed till a few hundred years ago, when this temple had seven praharas and a large, majestic tank. There is an open mandapam which has exquisite icons. This temple is said to have been built during the times of Kulothunga Chola III.Temple is very ancient and its in destruction phase  and the path to this temple is stashed between bushes, yet a visit to this temple is worth in terms of its archaeological beauty.

LORD BRAHMA

Two demons Madhu and Kaidapa snatched the Vedas from Brahmma and hide them under the sea. They were redeemed by Lord Vishnu and handed back to Brahmma. Yet Brahmma could not perform his creation job efficiently.

As Advised by Lord Vishnu, Brahmma worshipped Lord Shiva here and regained Gnana-wisdom on Avittam star day in the month of Aavani and resumed his creation job efficiently. As the Lord imparted Gnana to Brahamma, he is praised as Gnanapureeswarar.

SAINT GORAKKA

Gorakka Siddha came to this temple on his pilgrimage to Shiva temples.  He stayed in a mutt here where many devotees were also staying. While he woke up at midnight, he was shocked to see a woman sleeping by his side and her sari on his hands.  As repentance, he cut off his hands and stayed in the mutt for some time. He bathed in Chandra Pushkarani and worshipped Gnanapuresswarar and Pushpavalli.

Pleased with the devotion of Gorakkar, Lord appeared before him and restored his hands.  As hands were cut here, the place is called Korakkai and as the Siddha worshiped with short hands (after being cut), it is called Kurukkai. Changing with times, finally, it is now Korukkai

Temple Specialty

All Siva temples will have one Nandi (bull) before the Lord but out of usual there are two Nandis before Lord Siva and Pushpavathi and it is believed that if we offer cashew and groundnut garland to the Nandis our struggles will cease and we will have good fortune. Avittam nakshatra people are advised to visit this temple to release themselves from their planetary effects and to break the obstacles in their marriage and child birth.

TEMPLE GREATNESS

The place assumed Avittam star importance, as Lord Brahmma attained wisdom on this day. It is advised that Avittam star people visit this temple as often as they could or on the particular star day or birthday or on the star day falling in the month of Avani (August-September) and follow a step by step pradakshina which would favorably change their destiny totally.
