Maruthanallur Sri Sarguna Lingeswarar Temple boasts a rich history and stands as an important pilgrimage destination in Tamil Nadu. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Sarguna Lingeswarar, with the goddess Sri Soundaravalli Amman as the consort. This temple is the 186th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and the 69th on the southern side of the Cauvery River in Chozha Nadu.
The place, once known as TiruKarukudi, is now called Maruthanallur. Though small and ancient, the temple is renowned for its unique feature, where both the main deity and the goddess's sanctum face east. The temple's central deity is a Swayambu Shivalinga formed in sand.

TEMPLE HISTORY(STHALA VARALARU)
In the Ramayanam, before going to Lanka to rescue Sita, Rama visited this temple and created a Lingam from sand to worship, as Hanuman was delayed in bringing one from the north. The Lingam made by Rama is worshipped as the moolavar, and the one brought by Hanuman is called Hanumanta Lingam. The moolavar Lingam is made of mud, small in size, with a palm impression, as per the legend.
A trader named Dhananjayan contracted leprosy and, when asked how it happened, confessed that it was due to a grave sin—he had unknowingly committed an improper act with his stepmother. As this was considered a serious offense, the villagers cast him out. With no one else to turn to, Dhananjayan came to this temple, worshipped Lord Shiva, and was cured of his illness. Despite the severity of his sin, Lord Shiva, in His infinite compassion, forgave him, earning the deity the name Sarguna Lingeswarar. A statue of Dhananjayan is placed opposite the Amman shrine.
Another legend attributes the name Sarguna Lingeswarar to a Pandya king named Sargunan, who worshipped Shiva here. The temple is also associated with Brahma, leading to the name Brahmapureeswarar. The Vinayakar here is a Valampuri Vinayakar, and the Dakshinamurti is depicted with only two sages.
