Shiva Temples, Nayanmars & Pathigam Hymns in Tamil Nadu
Lord Shiva, popularly known as the lord of creation and re-creation, is symbolized by the Shiva Lingam worship. Saivism is the major faith in the Indian system of belief that worships Shiva as its principal deity. Shiva temples are spread all over India and attract devotees from across the world.
About Nayanmars
Thirunavukarasar, Thirugnanasambandar, and Sundarar were the first Nayanmars who composed devotional songs in praise of Lord Shiva after visiting temples and bringing out the glory of the God through their Pathigams. Despite hardships while traveling across Tamil Nadu, these Nayanmars visited various temples. Lord Shiva himself is said to have guided them to some temples, inspiring the composition of these hymns.
The Pathigam hymns, composed in classical Tamil, are invaluable to Tamil literature and convey a clear message: the temples mentioned in these hymns existed over 1000 years ago.
Role of King Rajaraja Chola
King Rajaraja Chola played a key role in compiling these songs and naming them “Devaram” with the help of his priest Nambiandar Nambi. The manuscripts were recovered from a chamber in Chidambaram Natarajar Temple, though only about half survived due to termite damage.
Why Padal Petra Sthalam?
The most revered temples, glorified by the 63 Nayanmars, particularly Thirunavukarasar, Sundarar, and Sambandar, are known as Tevara Paadal Petra Sthalam.
