The Sivanandeswarar Temple is located in Tirupandurai, a small village situated 9 km southeast of Kumbhakonam and near Nachiyar Koyil, along the route between Kumbhakonam and Karaikkal. This sacred temple, which is the 64th in the series of Tevara Stalams in the Chola Kingdom, is renowned for its historical and spiritual significance. It holds a prominent place as a Padal Petra Stalam, praised by the revered Saint Thiruganasambandar in his hymns.
The history of the temple is entwined with the divine stories of Lord Shiva and Lord Muruga. According to the legend, Lord Brahma, the Creator, was unable to answer a question posed by Lord Muruga—the meaning of the Om Pranava Mantra. In mockery, Lord Muruga imprisoned Brahma. In response, Lord Shiva condemned Muruga’s actions, halting creation. Muruga was informed that he could continue his work only after understanding the meaning of the Pranava Mantra.
This led to Lord Muruga's pride being punished by Lord Shiva, who made Muruga speechless. Seeking to regain his speech, Lord Muruga came to Tirupandurai, made a Shivalinga, and worshiped Lord Shiva. Pleased with Muruga’s devotion, Lord Shiva granted him the power of speech. Thus, Lord Shiva is praised as Pranaveswarar, the Lord of the Pranava Mantra, and the temple is revered for its connection to speech and communication.
