It is observed on the Krishna Paksha Ashtami (eighth day of the waning moon) of the Margashirsha month. This festival is celebrated to mark the birthday of Lord Kala Bhairava, who is considered a fierce form of Lord Shiva.

Shiva Manifestation as Lord Bhairava:

The Shiva Manifestation associated with Kala Bhairava Ashtami is rooted in the divine intervention of Lord Kala Bhairava to teach Lord Brahma a lesson. It is said that Lord Brahma became egoistic and claimed superiority over other deities. In response to Brahma's arrogance, Lord Shiva took the fierce form of Kala Bhairava, cutting off one of Brahma's heads. This act humbled Brahma and emphasized the importance of humility.

Kala Bhairava Ashtami Puja:

'Ashta' means 'eight,' and 'Ashtami' means 'eighth.' Therefore, Ashtami, the eighth day after the Full Moon day, is considered highly auspicious for worshiping Lord Kaal Bhairava. There are a total of twelve Kalashtamis in a year, and the one falling on a Sunday or Tuesday is believed to be particularly favorable for the worship of Lord Kal Bhairav.
